A subtle, but profound issue with aging is a loss of volume in the skin, most notably in the cheeks. Sunken, hollow cheeks create a skeletal, aged facial appearance. For this type of symptom, there is Restylane.
Developed in Switzerland, Restylane is a premium anti-aging dermal filler that erases patient’s fine lines and wrinkles by replacing diminished hyaluronic acid, a hydration-retaining polymer that our body generates naturally but produces less effectively with age.
Consider scheduling a consultation at one of Dr. Ken Reed conveniently-located offices to learn if Restylane is the right cosmetic treatment for you.
RESTYLANE
Weight loss, sun exposure, and simply the act of aging all take a toll on the texture and elasticityof our skin. If patients are not seeing their desired improvements from topical treatments, they may want to consider receiving a volumizing treatment of hyaluronic-rich Restylane.
Restylane is an injectable clear gel formula which replicates your body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid in order to restore volume and fullness in a patient’s facial features. This type of dermal filler is capable of improving the appearance of moderate to severe facial folds, particularly those formed around the nose and mouth. An injection of Restylane raises depressions to the level of surrounding skin and fills out wrinkles.
Overall, the texture and volume of the face improve, giving the patient a more youthful, healthy look. The results are noticeable but natural and subtle.
Restylane can also be used to achieve natural lip enhancement results in patients over 21.
THE NATURAL BENEFITS OF HYALURONIC ACID
The injection immediately restores fullness and improves the healthy glow of the skin.
When we are young, our skin looks firm and smooth thanks to a strong bonding of collagen and elastins. Keeping the collagen and elastin fortified is a healthy reserve of hyaluronic acid in our bodies, completing the tri-part alliance that supports our supple skin. Hyaluronic acid has the natural tendency to attract and retain water, making it the ideal, moisturizing support molecule. In fact, nearly every animal possesses and benefitsfrom the hydrating services hyaluronic acid performs for their bodies.
Unfortunately, as we age, our body slows its production of hyaluronic acid. Restylane offers a safe, effective means of re-introducing the moisturizing and volumizing benefit of hyaluronic acid back into our facial tissue. The dermal filler injects NASHA, or Non Animal-Derived Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid, into areas of the face where wrinkles or depressions have formed.
While the results of a Restylane injection are non-permanent, the patient will enjoy natural but improved skin texture and volume for three to six months. Many patients to opt for another Restylane treatment after these initial six months.
The experienced, friendly team at Integrated Dermatology would be happy to schedule a consultation with you to discuss your cosmetic dermal options.
AREAS TREATABLE WITH RESTYLANE
Restylane can improve volume and diminish the appearance of wrinkles in any of the following places:
Nasolabial Folds: Lines in the face which run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth. These are also known as laugh or smile lines.
Marionette Lines: These wrinkles extend downward from the corners of a patient’s mouth.
Corners of the Mouth
Lips: Patients over 21 can volumize both their upper and lower lip with Restylane.
Forehead
Area between the eyebrows
VARIETIES OF RESTYLANE
Restylane Defyne®: Restylane Defyne is capable of filling out deeper, more pronounced laugh and smile lines, while also preserving the ease of mobility of a patient’s mouth, thus improving the facial features without changing the shape of the patient’s smile.
Restylane Refyne®: Restylane Refyne incorporates XpresHAn technology to offer a patient the most natural results possible. Restylane Refyne is designed to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, while also preserving the patient’s natural motion when they laugh and smile.
Restylane Silk: Restylane Silk is designed to augment the upper and lower lip, as well as to improve wrinkles around the lips of patients over 21 years of age.
Restylane Lyft: Restylane Lyft can not only correct moderate to severe facial lines and folds, it can also be injected for cheek augmentation, as well as age-related deficiencies that have resulted in an undesirable contour in the mid-area of the patient’s face. Restylane Lyft can also be used to restore volume in the backs of patient’s hands.
ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS
There are a variety of dermal fillers available today to patients trying to combat the effects of aging. While Restylane is an effective way to volumize skin and fill wrinkles, every patient’s needs are different. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Reed today to find out which dermal filler might be best for you.
BELLAFILL
Bellafill relies on the injection of a collagen gel to diminish the appearance of smile lines. Bellafill is designed to leave a build-up of “miscrospheres” to which your own natural collagen can attach and improve. The results are an increase in skin’s volume, as well as a reduction in wrinkles. The results can last for up to five years.
BELOTERO
Belotero is also a wrinkle filler that injects a hyaluronic acid gel solution to diminish the appearance of both laugh and marionette lines. Using its own Cohesive Polydensified Matrix, or CPM, process, it not only reduces the wrinkles on a patient’s face for up to six months, the solution also works to improve the natural skin underneath the wrinkles.
RADIESSE
Radiesse is a dermal filler that injects a gel serum of Calcium Hydroxylapatite in order to restore volume and diminish wrinkles in the desired area of the patient’s face. The Radiesse gel also stimulates your body’s natural production of collagen, creating the opportunity for more long-lasting, natural improvement to the signs of aging on patient’s face. The results can last a year or more in patients.
VERSA
Revanessa Versa uses highly-controlled net-milling technology to ensure that the spherical particles of their hyaluronic injection integrate as naturally as possible into the patient’s facial tissue. Versa can achieve the desired smoothing and volumizing of wrinkles and nasolabial folds, while also resulting in less swelling for the patient immediately after the injection.
BOTOX
Botox is an injection of the botulinum toxin type A and an accompanying protein, with the intent of calming overactive muscles in the face causing and aggravating our wrinkles. The results last for three to six months. Botox is often paired with other cosmetic treatments.
JUVEDERM
Juvederm, like Restylane, achieves results with a hyaluronic-acid-based injection. Juvederm also offers a similar flexibility in where it can be applied to a patient’s face, but may not be able to accomplish the same filling results for patients trying to address concavity of their face or depressions under the eye. While both Restylane and Juvederm restore a comparable amount of moisture in patient’s faces, Juvederm sometimes provides better textural results for certain patients. Compared to Juvederm, the application of Restylane allows for more control of the face contouring; the altered shape tends to remain in place more exactly as desired. The results from a Juvaderm Ultra Plus treatment can last for up to nine to twelve months. Improvements made to a patient’s cheeks using Juvederm Voluma XC can last as long as two years. Call Integrated Dermatology and schedule a consultation to learn more about what dermal filler program may be best for you.
Depending on the needs of a particular patient, the team at Integrated Dermatology may advise they consider additional or alternative treatments like chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing, or microdermabrasion, or a more surgical procedure like a facelift or blepharoplasty.

CONSULTATION
To learn more about your candidacy for Restylane, schedule your private consultation with Dr. Ken Reed.
After a thorough examination of your medical history, as well as your physical exam, your surgeon will answer any questions you have concerning your cosmetic goals. Together, you and Dr. Reed will determine what dermal filler or other cosmetic programs will be right for you. Even after they have created your best individualized treatment plan, the doctors and their staff are always available to answer any questions you have about any aspect of the procedure.
PROCEDURE
During your Restylane dermal filling session, the Restylane gel will be injected into the designated areas in tiny amounts using an ultra-fine needle. Injections will be made in the deep and mid-layer tissues of the face or hands. Due to the thin size of the needle, most patients have a relatively pain-free experience. A local anesthetic can be applied, or lidocaine may be integrated into the Restylane formula to provide a more comfortable experience.
A Restylane procedure can be completed within 30 minutes. Patients see immediate improvement in the volume and softness of their skin or lips, as well as the disappearance of the lines and folds. Most are able to return to work immediately after their injection, although there will be initial swelling at the treated area. The swelling and any discomfort will abate in a few days.
The results will last between six to nine months. Based on a patient’s results, Dr. Ken Reed recommend the patient return for second and third injections within a two-year period, to help them achieve their best and longest-lasting results.
RECOVERY & CARE
In order to ensure a patient receives the best possible result from their Restylane injection, they are advised to avoid extreme sun exposure and heat in the days after their treatment, although they can return to work on the same day if they wish. Swelling is a common side effect of the injection, but it tends to resolve itself after a few days. Bruising and discomfort may also be experienced after a Restylane treatment. An ice pack can help soothe any swelling and discomfort; if these symptoms last for more than a few days, reach out to the doctors at Integrated Dermatology.
It is also advisable not to overuse the muscles where the Restylane was administered whenever possible in the first few days after the procedure, to avoid the risk of diminishing the longevity of the effects.
RESULTS
Recipients of a Restylane treatment will see volume restored to their lips, skin, and/or cheeks. The carefully-placed injection will smooth the lines and folds in a patient’s skin and fill in depressions in the skin’s surface. The changes are noticeable, but natural and healthy-looking.
The results of a Restylane injection tend to last for six to nine months. After consulting with the patient, Dr. Ken Reed may recommend the patient return for second and third injections within a two-year period, to help them achieve their best and longest lasting results.
